new beginnings.

Since opening Ivy & Reed Counseling and Consulting, many have been so kind to comment on how beautiful the website is, or how cozy the office space feels. But for me, I am hyper aware of the blood, sweat, and tears that preceded the opening of this practice. Maybe you can relate, but 2024 was a doozy. Facing a series of challenging personal and professional changes prompted me to reassess my path. I won’t lie, there were many moments I felt that I was at the edge of total and utter despair. But it was during these moment that I was forced to make a choice — step over the edge, or keep my feet planted firmly on the ground and take a look around, maybe find another path to set my feet. And let’s be clear here, it was not always as sagacious as it sounds. I sat on the edge of that cliff and ugly cried more times than I would like to admit. And that’s okay. I needed to feel sad. I needed to acknowledge that the things that were happening were scary. But one day, instead of staring down off the edge, I took the time to look up. And then suddenly, even through teary eyes, you start to see the beauty around you. You notice the scenery, a comforting sunset. You notice the people who are right there next to you, holding you. You notice the laughter and the smiles. You notice the numerous alternative paths that lead you away from the cliff. The hardships don’t disappear (though, wouldn’t that be nice). But you realize that when you acknowledge the hardship, call it out for what it is, and recognize that it is only one area of the greater landscape, you strip it of it’s power. You put yourself in control. And in the midst of hardship, celebrating your life and your victories becomes a profound act of resilience, illuminating the path forward with hope and courage. As you move forward on the new path, you don’t forget the journey. You know what it took to get here. But now you see it with a wisdom and an appreciation you didn’t have before.

Ivy & Reed Counseling and Consulting was born from such a journey. It has a past—but with any past comes great wisdom. My hope for this practice is to provide a space for people to bring their whole selves. The best and the worst. Whether you are navigating personal challenges, struggling in your relationships, or simply seeking support, we’ve been there, and we are here to help.

New Beginnings and the Symbolism of Ivy and Reed

In the realm of personal growth and transformation, the concept of new beginnings holds profound significance. Every individual experiences moments in life where change is not just inevitable but necessary. Whether it’s a new job, a relocation, the end of a relationship, or the pursuit of a personal goal, embracing these transitions can lead to renewed strength and self-discovery.

The Symbolism of Ivy

Ivy is often associated with fidelity, affection, and the ability to overcome challenges, which makes it a powerful symbol for new beginnings. Its vigorous growth and tenacity allow it to thrive in various environments, reflecting the resilience required during transitional phases of life. In many cultures, ivy has also represented strong connections, whether to family, friends, or the self. This connection is vital during times of change, as the support system can help anchor new personal journeys.

When embarking on a new path, it is beneficial to embody the characteristics of ivy: to be adaptable, to grow despite adversity, and to nurture the connections that matter most. Just as ivy climbs and spreads, we are reminded that growth requires reaching out and embracing new opportunities.

The Symbolism of Reed

On the other hand, the reed carries its own unique symbolism that complements the theme of new beginnings. Reeds are known for their flexibility and ability to withstand harsh conditions, bending with the wind yet rarely breaking. This quality signifies resilience in the face of challenges and the importance of remaining grounded while being open to change.

Additionally, a reed must be hollow to produce sound when used in an instrument, allowing the air to vibrate freely inside, creating a beautiful sound. In therapy, we often need to hollow ourselves out, releasing old beliefs, habits, and patterns that no longer serve us. This process creates space for new perspectives and experiences, allowing fresh insights and growth to take root, ultimately composing a new song for our lives.

Merging Ivy and Reed

When we combine the symbolism of ivy and reed, we find a powerful narrative for embarking on new beginnings. Ivy encourages us to forge connections and reach out for support, while reed reminds us to stay flexible and resilient. Together, they create a harmonious balance between reaching for growth and remaining rooted.

As you contemplate your own new beginnings, consider what ivy and reed represent for you. Reflect on the relationships that nurture you and the inner strength that allows you to adapt to change. Embrace the journey ahead, armed with the wisdom of these symbols, and trust that every new beginning can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in the world.
